7 Spectacular Shoalhaven Waterfalls

Holiday Haven
26 Jun 2023

Way back in the mid-90s, an American hip-hop girl group named TLC warned us to “don’t go chasing waterfalls”. But when you have access to such natural splashy wonders, why on earth would you stick to the rivers and the lakes that you’re used to? Allow us to share 7 of our favourite waterfalls – for viewing or swimming – all an easy drive from your Holiday Haven home base.

Berrara Creek Waterfall

This is a scenic shallow rocky waterfall and a great swimming hole located in the Conjola National Park along the 2hr loop Berrara Creek Walk from Cudmirrah – home to Swan Lake Holiday Haven. It’s a secluded halfway spot to enjoy a picnic while surrounded by nature.

Granite Falls

You’ll find the Twelve Mile Road turn off south of the Sussex Inlet exit – taking you west into Morton National Park. From the carpark, it’s an easy 1km walk through the eucalypt and stringybark bush to the lookout, with scenic views of the namesake granite flanked 63m-high falls and plenty of space for a picnic, with wildflowers in bloom in spring.

Tianjara Falls

Tianjara Falls

Also situated in Morton National Park and accessed via Braidwood Rd (Main Rd 92) south west of Nowra, these lesser-known stunning falls are worth the journey. The track to the lookout is wheelchair accessible and you’ll be rewarded with an impressive cascading vista – especially moody in rainy conditions.

Fairy Bower Falls

Located near the town of Bundanoon, a 1-hour loop track begins at Gambells Rest picnic area – with a grade that’s medium to occasionally steep. Along the way, you can enjoy views from the Tooths Lookout, while the falls themselves can be viewed up-close-and-personal, surrounded by lush ferns.

Belmore Falls

Belmore Falls

This dramatic showstopper hidden in the countryside behind Robertson, Belmore plunges over three drops along the Barrengarry River into Kangaroo Valley, with twin falls ranging between 70m and 130m. The best viewing is from Hindmarsh Lookout, a 1.8km loop track from the carpark.

Fitzroy Falls

Fitzroy Falls

The jewel in the crown of the cluster of Morton National Park falls, Fitzroy Falls is one of the most spectacular in all of Australia – with an 81m drop into an ancient Jurassic-Park-esque bush-clad valley below. There are multiple viewing points and a great visitor centre and cafe. A short drive from Holiday Haven Kangaroo Valley.

Carrington Falls

Situated on the road between Jamberoo Mountain and Robertson, these Budderoo National Park falls see the Kangaroo River plunge 50m down into the valley below – a beautiful sight especially after rain. The surrounding area also boasts plenty of walking tracks and Nellies Glen is a popular summer swimming hole with its own smaller splashtastic falls and rock shelves.
